Harney County wildfires explode amid lightning storms, evacuations underway

HARNEY COUNTY, Ore. (KTVZ) — A dangerous surge of wildfire activity is unfolding in Harney County, where multiple fast-moving fires have exploded in size following a wave of lightning storms and extreme heat.

Several large fires are now burning across hundreds of thousands of acres, forcing Level 3 “Go Now” evacuations in some areas and stretching firefighting resources thin. State leaders have also stepped in, with Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek invoking the Emergency Conflagration Act as conditions continue to worsen.

Among the most concerning blazes is a rapidly growing fire near the Harney-Malheur county line that remains completely uncontained. Other fires burning near key highway corridors and rural communities are also showing aggressive behavior, fueled by wind and dry conditions.

While some smaller fires are beginning to see progress, others continue to challenge crews as shifting weather patterns threaten to push flames closer to homes and critical infrastructure.
