Bear Beware: Increasing presence of Black Bears as Seasons Change

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office Animal Control Unit captured video last Friday of a black bear near South Century Drive and Vandevert Road in South Deschutes County.

Animal control officers have responded to several reports of bear activity in the area throughout the month.

Sheriff's office officials stated that increased bear activity is normal behavior during late summer as bears forage for food to prepare for winter. The bear recorded by animal control was observed feeding on an elk carcass.

Following the sightings, the Sheriff's Office issued safety guidelines for local residents. Officials advised people never to approach or feed bears and to secure garbage, pet food and any items with strong food scents. Food-conditioned bears can break into vehicles, garages and homes.

Authorities also warned that feeding bears puts domestic pets, especially small dogs, at risk during unexpected encounters. Black bears are generally shy and nonaggressive and officials recommend leaving the animals alone.
