UPDATE: More than $600k in damage after home under construction catches fire in Bend

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Bend Fire & Rescue crews responded to a structure fire at a home under construction on Greenmont Drive in south Bend just after 4 p.m. today.

The Alfalfa Fire District also sent a water tender to assist.

Firefighters arrived within five minutes of the initial dispatch and found flames in the attic area of the home, according to Bend Fire & Rescue. No one was inside at the time, and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Bend Fire & Rescue estimates the loss to the structure and its contents at $637,493.

Fire officials say attic fires can grow unnoticed because they often start in areas of a home that are not regularly occupied. They recommend installing smoke alarms on every level of a home and in every bedroom, testing them monthly and replacing batteries as needed.
