(Update: Bend Police identify victim, provide details)
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) – A 52-year-old Bend man was struck and killed by a freight train while lying on the tracks near Southeast Wilson Avenue Monday evening, police said. No foul play is suspected.
Police were dispatched around 5:43 p.m. to the reported collision, Bend Police Communications Manager Sheila Miller said Tuesday.
An investigation determined that the man, identified as Tony Ray Monen, was lying on the tracks when he was struck by a southbound BNSF freight train. He died at the scene.
Wilson Avenue was closed between Ninth and Centennial Streets until about 9:30 p.m. as the Bend Police crash reconstruction team conducted its investigation.
Police said in a post to X around 6 p.m. that “SE Wilson Avenue is currently closed in both directions in the area of the train tracks.”
“Traffic is being diverted to Ninth and Centennial, but please expect extended delays as officers investigate a fatal train vs. pedestrian crash,” the tweet concluded.
