CRESCENT, Ore. (KTVZ) — A Klamath Falls man was killed Monday night on Highway 97 after stepping into traffic while trying to retrieve a dog that had run into the roadway, according to investigators.

The crash happened on June 22nd at about 10:07 p.m. near milepost 200 in Klamath County.

Oregon State Police say 67-year-old Scott Henry Beggio was standing in the southbound lane of Highway 97 near Chemult when he was struck by a southbound commercial truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck was a white Freightliner driven by 44-year-old Larry Dotson of Vicksburg, Mississippi. Authorities said the driver was not injured.

Preliminary findings indicate Beggio had entered the roadway in an attempt to reach his dog, which had run into traffic.

The highway was closed for roughly five hours while investigators worked the scene.

Oregon State Police were assisted by the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office, Chemult Rural Fire Protection District, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
