Beyond books: Deschutes Public Library provides a wide variety of events, programs for Central Oregonians

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- The Deschutes Public Library offers a wide variety of programs, with something new to observe, explore or take part in every month. Books are a big part of it, of course, but learning well beyond them is a big part, too.

At the Downtown Bend Library, there are recurring events, as well as some new ones for you to look forward to. Events for the library are posted two months in advance.

The libraries are a great place to study, gather knowledge -- and, of course, read books.

"I figured out once that we read something like 6,000 books to our daughter over her young days, and they all came from the library," Bend resident Buddy Mays said Sunday.

But the library provides more than books. It offers story times, open mic nights, tech workshops, and there's also a notary in the library.

Each month, in addition to regular programs, there are programs based off a monthly theme. This month's theme is centered around "stories."

DPL Program Coordinator Elsa Hager said, "The February's theme is going to be 'puzzles.' And then in March we have 'coast' and April will be 'gardens.' So it varies a lot from month to month."

On Sunday, people came in to play different story-themed board games -- it was a game day with Modern Games.

Mays said, "It's an interesting concept --the new games. We do play board games, but the new games are way above anything we play at home."

This year, you can also expect to see Parsley -- a registered therapy bunny that came in last year. He will hopefully be back in April.

The library also partnered with Mountain Air Trampoline Park in December to sponsor a toddler jump time. The hope is to continue that event quarterly.

Hager said, "I really value being able to provide programs that are educational, as well as fun."

The remodeled La Pine and Sisters branches are now open. And in La Pine, there will be teen hangouts coming up and programs with the Sunriver Nature Center and Observatory.
