Bank damage, Dumpster set ablaze in downtown Portland Tuesday night

PORTLAND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Portland police say a group of about 100 anarchists caused more than $500,000 in damage to businesses and government buildings in downtown Portland Tuesday night.

KGW reported the violence broke out at the end of a memorial gathering to mark the 2-year anniversary of the killing of self-proclaimed anarchist Sean Kealiher.

In 2019, the Oregonian/OregonLive reported that Kealiher, 23, was hit by an SUV while he was leaving Cider Riot, a now-closed bar in Northeast Portland that was popular among left-wing activists.

The newspaper said gunshots were fired at the vehicle that hit Kealiher, and it was found crashed into a wall, but the driver was not located at the scene.

Kealiher was dropped off at a hospital that night. Police said he died of blunt force trauma.

No arrests have been made in connection to Kealiher's death.

Here's the full Portland Police Bureau release:

On October 12, 2021, at about 9:00 p.m., Central Precinct officers learned that a group had gathered in the area of Chapman Square Park, and some participants were blocking Southwest 3rd Avenue. Some fencing from the park was used to barricade the street. Some illegal aerial fireworks were set off, as well as graffiti to buildings.

At about 10:00 p.m., the group began to march. Mostly within a time span of about 10 minutes, participants broke numerous windows and bank ATMs. Officers were called to respond citywide, and all but the highest priority life safety 911 calls were left to hold so officers could be dispatched. At the same time, the group began to light garbage cans and dumpsters on fire in the street.

When resources arrived, the crowd was given direction to disperse by loudspeaker. A Mobile Field Force moved in and the crowd splintered into multiple directions.

Some group members laid down in front of police vehicles to attempt to prevent police response. Police believe that some people involved in criminal activity were changing clothes as they were moving to further stymie efforts to identify them. Two unexploded illegal fireworks were recovered along the march route. The group had largely dispersed by 11:00 p.m.

Investigations into the criminal behavior are underway. No arrests have been made yet. At this point, the damage is believed to be in excess of $500,000, and reports are still being compiled. There were 35 separate locations that were targeted, including banks, retail stores, coffee shops, and government buildings. If anyone has information about who committed crimes, please notify crimetips@portlandoregon.gov attention: Central NRT.

"I'm concerned about the brazen criminal acts that took place downtown last night," said Chief Chuck Lovell. "I want to assure those who were victimized that investigations are underway, and we will do whatever we can to identify and arrest those who were responsible. We ask that anyone with information please reach out to us. Thank you to all the officers who responded to a challenging situation."

        1. But wait, isn’t dear leader, the big fat failed and fired New York City trust fund baby going to be reinstated!!!!! There’s just no way he could have lost!!! He had the lowest approval ratings in the history of the nation according to feaux news. Never led President Biden in the polls according to feaux news!!!! So how could he possibly have lost!!!! ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!! Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much losing karen!!!!!!!!

  1. And not one arrest? The left continues to create mayhem and rack up millions of dollars in damage unmitigated at the expense to the law abiding ordinary citizens that are expected to sit idle and turn their heads.

  2. The police response was pathetic!!! Dispersed the crowd? They should have rounded up the entire violent group and put them in jail. Portland is a liberal sewer.

      1. Totally blame them. They have a job to do, are professionals, and need to do it. Just following orders doesn’t cut it.

        Disperse. No arrests. Total joke.

    1. If the slogan “defund the police” was really in place as these destructive people want, this would not be happening. The police are the ones who are forced to actually provide protection for these idiots. Remove that police protection and see what happens.

  3. wait… they broke a few windows and started a dumpster on fire, and cops call that a half million dollars? lol… yeah, ok. How many $Billions of damage did actual right wing terrorist trump minions do to the US Capitol on Jan 6th then?

  4. I Love it!! Sow and reap. Interesting that the democrats had exploited these people to further their agenda but now that they no longer need them as a distraction, they are no longer “peaceful protesters” but are now rioters and anarchists.

      1. Barney, Barney, Barney. Really?

You really think the media accurately portrayed the violent riots that were happening on the ground? And if by government, you mean: The Governor, The Mayor, The Portland City Council, and The State Legislators?

        Really!?

        1. Yes, they were extensively and accurately covered. We posted numerous Portland Police Bureau releases, usually in full and photos they shared, as we are not based in Portland it sometimes gave a fuller picture than available to us from AP/Portland stations.

          1. You couldn’t be more wrong Barney. Extensively yes, accurate, not even close. You were never there so just stop. The disconnect between fantasy and reality of the liberal mind is curious.

      2. Where is your link that proves what your saying it true Barney??? Thats seems to always be YOUR response.. Without a link you can not prove that your claim is true, right?? Those are basically your words..

      3. Barney – appreciate that you have to deal with the nonsense on these boards. But, and it’s a big one, if you think the media have not been supporting these criminal acts of destruction along with some of this great countries most recognizable politicians, you are delusional. How many times have we heard from media pundits and government officials that it’s time to shut down our protective forces (some refer to such nonsense as defund the police) and we’ve all seen the coverage of “mostly peaceful” protests which resembles more of an active war zone than an American city.

        1. We report facts, and no one called the rioters peaceful protesters. Is reporting on riots “supporting” them? No. If Portland police didn’t declare it a riot, the media wasn’t about to – that’s not our role, no matter what the critics say. The critics have been misstating what media reports from day 1, with a lot of whataboutisms and hooey. No one supports violence. It’s a very fair debate over whether enough was/is done to stop the violence. The rest is just the Blame Society as usual.

    1. I hear idaho is nice and diseased and backward this time of year, no doubt you’d be much happier there!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      1. Not sure why I bother responding to fools like yourself Herr Gropen but here goes. Drive down the 405 from Hwy 30, to I 5 in Portland. Look at the disgusting filth the entire way. Remember, this is right through the heart of Portland’s beloved Pearl District. Read the Oregon Live today and understand how the business owners and home owners are fed up with this. So, throw your snarkey Idaho comments out if you like, but I have lived in Oregon over 50 years and have seen the slow decline. Our parkway has become the 405.

    1. Yeah. Setting a dumpster on fire and breaking a few windows was way more damaging than pillaging the American capitol building and looking for elected officials to kidnap.

Doesnt hold a candle to the act of open rebellion committed by the trump insurrectionists.

  5. To sum it up for those not from Portland………..the Anti-fa idiots do what they do because they are in fact, idiots….all of them; and the weak minded are easily misled and mischievous when there are no adults in the room. I’ve seen these “protestors” up close and personal, and trust me there are no world leaders in the making. In fact , most would need help tying their shoes. If you need a visual try to imagine Beavis and Butthead yelling and throwing rocks while Dumb and Dumber look on trying to figure out what to do. Then try to figure out why Portland voters keep electing Dumb and Dumber.
