DCSO: Rider lost control on uneven FS roadway; CPR efforts unsuccessful

La PINE, Ore. (KTVZ) -- A Bend man was killed Sunday evening in the crash of his motorcycle near Wickiup Reservoir, west of La Pine, Deschutes County sheriff's deputies said.

Deschutes County 911 received a call just after 6:30 p.m. from a camper in the area who reported a motorcycle crash south of the reservoir on U.S. Forest Service Road 950, near USFS Road 44, Lt. Mike Biondi said. The caller advised the rider was unconscious and CPR had been started on him.

Several deputies and Forest Service Law Enforcement officers responded to the scene, along with La Pine Rural Fire District medics, Biondi said. Deputies took over CPR until medics arrived to continue life-saving efforts, but the rider, identified as Eli Reed, 43, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Biondi said an investigation determined Reed had been riding on Forest Service Road 950 with two others. Reed had just passed the two fellow riders when he lost control of his motorcycle on the uneven roadway and was thrown to the ground. He was unresponsive, and a witness began CPR.

Reed was wearing his helmet at the time of the crash, Biondi said. The crash investigation closed the USFS Road 950 for more than four hours.

Sheriff's detectives and the state Medical Examiner's Office assisted in the investigation.
