BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Deschutes County Road Department crews swung the gates and closed the Cascade Lakes Highway and Paulina Lake Road for the winter on Thursday. The roads will remain closed until late spring, after crews are able remove the accumulated snow.

County road crews provide maintenance on both roadways. The snow accumulation at the road summits can exceed five to10 feet, and continual snow and ice maintenance is cost-prohibitive, officials say.
