Seven earthquakes strike 100 to 150 miles off Oregon coast, strongest at 5.7 magnitude

PORT ORFORD, Ore. (KGW/KTVZ) — The US Geological Survey reported a series of seven earthquakes Tuesday off the southern Oregon coast, all about 100 to 150 miles southwest of Port Orford, ranging from 3.0 to 5.7 in magnitude, KGW reported Wednesday.

All of the quakes recorded a depth of about 6.2 miles and no injuries were reported. A total of 19 people reported feeling them; 17 of those reports came from the 5.7 earthquake.

Earthquakes in the Pacific Ocean off the Oregon coast are common. The USGS says a magnitude 5.7 earthquake is considered a "moderate" earthquake. 

According to the USGS, "each whole number increase in magnitude represents a tenfold increase in measured amplitude as measured on a seismogram."
