Reminder: Tuesday is the deadline to register to vote in the May primary or to update your info, register with a party

Oregon Secretary of State's Office

SALEM, Ore. (KTVZ) — Tuesday is the deadline to register to vote in the May 21 primary election. It’s also the deadline to register with a political party ahead of the closed primaries. Voters can register or update their registration online at OregonVotes.gov until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Republican and Democratic parties have chosen to hold closed primaries, which means only registered members of the party will be able to vote in those primaries. All voters, regardless of party affiliation, will receive ballots with nonpartisan contests and ballot measures.

Minor parties — like the Independent Party, Pacific Green Party, and No Labels Party — hold their own nominating process, and their candidates will appear on the General Election ballot in November.

“Oregonians are voters,” said Secretary of State LaVonne Griffin-Valade. “We’ve worked together to build the most convenient and secure voting system in the country, and that starts with registering to vote. Registration takes only a few minutes. If you haven’t already registered, or you want to update your voter registration, there’s no time like the present.”

The Secretary of State’s 2024 Civic Engagement toolkit provides ready-to-use resources designed to promote voting in our communities. It includes social media posts, sample emails, and other valuable tools that are free to use without attribution. Access the toolkit online here.

What you need to know about the May 2024 primary election

  • The deadline to register to vote or register with a political party is April 30, 2024.
  • Both the Republican and Democratic parties in Oregon choose to hold closed primaries. That means you won’t see those candidates on your ballot unless you are a registered member of the party.
  • Ballots will be sent out starting May 1, 2024.
  • Election Day is May 21, 2024. Ballots must be received by 8 p.m. or postmarked on this day to be counted.
  • Return your ballot in the mail, at a county clerk’s office, or at any of the secure, official drop boxes available throughout the state. Your ballot will be routed to the county in which you are registered to vote for processing.
  • The postmark law, passed in 2021, allows ballots postmarked on or before Election Day to count as long as they’re received no later than 7 days after the election. For this reason, election results may be delayed because it will take a few days for all the votes to be counted.
  • Preliminary results will be available on the Secretary of State website starting at 8 p.m. on Election Day.
  • The last day for the Secretary to certify election results is June 27, 2024.
  • The 2024 elections will be the most secure elections in history. Learn all the ways we protect your vote at OregonVotes.gov/Integrity
