Community invited to Earth Day Fair and Parade in downtown Bend
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- The Environmental Center is thrilled to host their family-friendly Earth Day Fair and Parade on Saturday, April 20th, from 11:30 am to 3 pm. This outdoor event features and celebrates our community through music and dance performances, local food vendors, businesses and nonprofits from across the region, electric car/bike demonstrations, an activity zone for all ages, and more!
Amelia Remington Corbari, Communications Manager at The Environmental Center, encourages people to sign up to volunteer this year. “We have a few vacant volunteer positions, and we hope to get those filled before Saturday so we can ensure a smooth parade and event! Volunteering is really fun, and a great way to meet new people and get involved with The Environmental Center if you haven’t before.”
One volunteer position includes educating patrons at the waste sorting stations.
“Our Rethink Waste program has worked with event hosts over the years, and one of the most successful tactics a host can employ to make sure waste ends up in the correct place is to have staff or volunteers physically helping out at the sorting stations,” says Amelia. “And, we’re offering reusable dishware again this year. We tried this for the first time last year and it was quite successful, and diverted a ton of single use food containers and utensils from the landfill.”
Gather at 11:00 am at the intersection of Louisiana and Bond to get ready for the parade, which will feature uniquely crafted Earth Guardian puppets, Maya T’aan, and Grupo Tlalok from the Portland/Metro area, and community members in costume from 11:30-12pm. At 12:00, all are invited to gather at Troy Field to listen to an opening story from local artist Teafly and her Earth Guardians, and remarks from The Environmental Center staff. Midday will feature performances by Fodeliche Syzzla and group and traditional Mayan drumming and dancing led by Grupo Maya, Mexica Chichimeca danza.
Please, no written words on banners or costumes, and no motorized vehicles in the parade.
Other highlights include local food carts, free face painting, garden activities, green organizations/businesses, a Bend Fire and Rescue fire truck, and an EV showcase!
