BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) – With more hazardous air quality readings late Monday, Central Oregon school districts, as well as private schools, again weighed whether to open their school buildings, though most still are focusing on online learning.

Air quality readings as E::Space provides for our Local Alert Weather page had improved in Bend and Prineville earlier Monday, but all were back at hazardous levels by Monday night.

Jefferson County School District 509-J said it will keep school buildings closed Tuesday, with virtual classes continuing as scheduled. The meals program will take place only from 7:30-8:30 a.m. at Madras and Bridges High School and the Warm Springs K-8 Academy.

The Crook County School District said kindergarten through third-grade students will return to the classroom Tuesday, along with students at Pioneer, Brothers and Paulina.

They said all safety precautions will be followed until the air quality returns to normal. Doors and windows will remain closed, and students will stay inside for lunch and recess.

Comprehensive Distance Learning, Crook County Online Option, and the Homeschool Partner Program will continue as normal, the district said.

The Redmond School District said that “after a thorough review of the air quality of all school buildings,” they decided to reopen all school campuses on Tuesday. Online classes will continue as scheduled and regular meal distribution will resume. Air quality will be evaluated daily.

Bend-La Pine Schools began their school year Monday, with all students in comprehensive distance learning.

St. Francis of Assisi School, preschool thru 5th grade in-person learning was canceled for Tuesday due to the hazardous air, and will be conducted online instead.

Redmond Airport's flight status page Tuesday morning showed Alaska Airlines flights canceled again Tuesday, though Delta, American and United airlines' flights were arriving and departing.
