Police report ICE-involved shooting in Austin, Texas

By Eduardo Cuevas, CNN

A federal immigration agent shot a man Sunday in Austin, officials in the Texas city said.

City officials confirmed the shooting involved an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in North Austin.

Just before 1 p.m., Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services officials responded to a reported shooting in the 8000 block of Anderson Square, Robert Luckritz, the city’s EMS chief, said in a Sunday afternoon news conference.

An adult male was identified as suffering from a gunshot wound and was described as in stable but serious condition, Luckritz said. Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said the man was transported to Dell Seton Medical Center in Austin.

Watson said police were not involved in the shooting involving an ICE agent, but local police investigators were at the scene and doing traffic control in the area.

Police Chief Lisa Davis said the incident may have included a foot chase with the ICE agent.

Watson said questions remain on the investigation, and he expressed skepticism of whether ICE can do an independent investigation. He said the Texas Rangers and Austin Police will take part in the investigation.

The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

CNN affiliate KVUE was filming the aftermath of the incident, showing a damaged blue sedan near Anderson Square and US Route 183.

Democratic Congressman Greg Casar, who represents Austin, said in a social media post he was calling for an independent investigation into the shooting.
