There’s Good News: Madras students plant more than 1,000 mangroves in Costa Rica

MADRAS, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Madras High School students participated in a significant mangrove restoration project in Costa Rica. On a recent conservation trip, the students planted more than 1,000 mangrove seedlings in an area that had been devastated by a hurricane. The initiative aims to stabilize shorelines, improve water quality and provide essential habitat for countless species.

The restoration work involved physically demanding tasks, including carrying supplies and planting in tropical heat and knee-deep mud. Despite the challenging conditions, students maintained positive attitudes and strong work ethics throughout the day. They collaborated with students from other schools, fostering teamwork and mutual support.

The Madras High School students were noted for their resilience, teamwork and determination, which was evident from early morning until evening. They encouraged one another and motivated peers from other schools to continue their efforts in the demanding environment. This experience highlighted the principle that meaningful change occurs when individuals work together toward a shared objective.

Students built new friendships, demonstrated leadership qualities and represented Madras High School with pride during the conservation effort. A teacher accompanying the group remarked that watching them collaborate, encourage one another and step up as leaders was one of the most rewarding aspects of the day. The teacher also praised their kindness and their ability to motivate other students to give their best effort.

The long-term impact of the newly planted mangroves is expected to benefit the local ecosystem significantly. These young plants will contribute to shoreline stability, enhance the quality of the water and create vital habitats for numerous wildlife species for years to come. The work took place in the hot and humid jungles and mangrove forests of Costa Rica.
