Bend fugitive from police chase, manhunt captured at transient camp

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) – A Bend fugitive wanted since an April 30 police chase and manhunt had police surrounding his travel trailer, which turned out to be unoccupied, has been captured in the same area, at a transient camp north of Bend, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said Saturday.

Deputies took Brenden Michael Camirand, 28, into custody without further incident at a transient camp east of Highway 97, near Fort Thompson Lane, Sgt. James McLaughlin said.

Camirand was booked into the county jail early Saturday on three outstanding warrants and was held without bail on a parole violation, along with new charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, felony and misdemeanor attempting to elude police (in a vehicle and on foot), methamphetamine delivery and possession, heroin possession and a misdemeanor charge of driving with a suspended license.

Around 7 p.m on April 30th., Bend police notified deputies a stolen Honda Civic was seen leaving the city to the north on the Bend Parkway, Sgt. Kent Vander Kamp said.

Deputies spotted the car heading north on Highway 97 at Robal Road. They tried to pull the car over, but the driver, later identified as Camirand, sped away, triggering a pursuit.

Camirand had three outstanding arrest warrants, Vander Kamp said; court records show they are for driving with a suspended or revoked license, from late last year and early this year.

Court records also show Camirand pleaded guilty last summer to fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer and was sentenced to nine days in jail, 18 months probation and a 1-year driver's license suspension. A month later, due to a probation violation, his sentence was revised to 60 days in jail.

Camirand turned east onto public land near Fort Thompson Lane, then traveled off-road to a homeless camp, where he got out and ran, Vander Kamp said.

Deputies found a nearby travel trailer Camirand lives in and surrounded it, also calling in a drone and armored SWAT vehicle. Believing he likely was inside, they called for him to peacefully surrender and got no reply.

Deputies also obtained a search warrant for the trailer and, with the help of DCSO SWAT Team members, forced entry into the trailer late that night. But he was not inside, Vander Kamp said.

The car was returned to its owner. Deputies were assisted at the scene by Bend and Redmond police.
