EUGENE, Ore. (KTVZ) -- The University of Oregon’s annual spring football game became more than a preview of the Ducks’ upcoming season — it turned into a large-scale tribute to service members, veterans and their families with deep ties to Oregon.

Held April 25 at Autzen Stadium, the event brought together the Oregon National Guard, other military branches, veterans and more than 35,000 fans under clear skies for a day that blended football with recognition and community connection.

Before kickoff, service members, veterans, families and first responders unfurled a large American flag across the field. Oregon Army National Guard Sgt. 1st Class Ben Pasi performed the national anthem, followed by a flyover from two F-15 Eagle fighter jets from the Oregon Air National Guard’s 142nd Wing based in Portland.

Brig. Gen. Alan R. Gronewold, adjutant general of the Oregon National Guard, performed the ceremonial coin toss to open the game.

Throughout the afternoon, the focus remained on honoring those who serve. Military families and local veterans were recognized during the game, while halftime featured an oath of enlistment ceremony for new recruits and service members extending their commitments, administered by Gronewold.

Fans also got a glimpse of the Ducks’ upcoming season as the “Combat Team” defeated the “Fighting Team” 17-10.

The day concluded with a crowd-favorite tradition — a postgame T-shirt exchange between service members and University of Oregon football players — highlighting the strong bond between the military and the local community.

The annual spring game continues to serve as both a football showcase and a meaningful way to recognize Oregon’s service members and their families.
