Update: New details released in deadly Highway 126 crash west of Redmond

(Update: Hwy 126 crash killed 1 person; 2 people injured)

REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- New information is shedding light on a deadly crash that shut down Highway 126 west of Redmond for hours on Sunday.

Oregon State Police say the two-vehicle crash happened at about 1:11 p.m. on May 17th, near milepost 107, roughly five miles west of Redmond.

According to a preliminary investigation, a green Chevrolet Silverado driven by 63-year-old Lee Glenn Bernard of Lebanon was traveling eastbound when it crossed into the westbound lane for an unknown reason. A westbound blue Subaru Outback, driven by 77-year-old Scott Macleod Nicol of Redmond, attempted to avoid the pickup, but the two vehicles collided head-on.

Bernard was pronounced dead at the scene.

His passenger, 66-year-old Sandra M. Kronour of Lebanon, and Nicol were both transported to area hospitals with serious injuries.

The crash closed both directions of Highway 126 for approximately three hours as crews responded and investigated. OSP was assisted by the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office and the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Authorities have not said what caused the pickup to cross into oncoming traffic.
