CROOKED RIVER RANCH, Ore. (KTVZ) — Firefighters contained a wind-driven brush fire Saturday afternoon that threatened a home and outbuildings on Southwest Peninsula Drive.

Crews were dispatched around 2:02 p.m. to the 14800 block of SW Peninsula Drive, where the first arriving engine found about a quarter-acre of brush burning and being pushed by winds toward a residence and several sheds. Firefighters deployed hose lines to protect the structures and quickly knocked down flames near the home before working across the property to extinguish the remaining fire.

Additional resources were called in to assist with containment and mop-up. Crews remained on scene for about two hours, ultimately holding the fire to approximately 0.35 acres.

Officials said recent grazing on the property helped limit fire spread. The homeowner had used goats to reduce grass and shrubs across a large portion of the land, which slowed the fire’s advance and aided crews in keeping it contained to the property of origin.

The home sustained minor damage. No injuries were reported.

The fire is believed to have been caused by improper disposal of smoking materials. Fire officials remind residents to discard smoking materials in a metal container filled with sand or water.

Six engines, one tender and one support unit responded, with a total of 17 personnel, including seven career and 10 volunteer firefighters. Mutual aid assistance was provided by Redmond Fire & Rescue.

UPDATE: According to Watch Duty, "...the fire is holding at half an acre with forward progress stopped. There is still some fire in the canyon. Firefighters have a wet line around the fire."
