Bend Heroes Foundation to mark 80th anniversary of D-Day at Bend Heroes Memorial
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) - Thursday marks the 80th anniversary of D–Day, when American and allied forces attacked the Germans with the seaborne and airborne invasion of Normandy, France.
After 11 months of bitter fighting, the Germans surrendered to the allies on May 5, 1945 ending the war in Europe.
To honor those brave American heroes who participated in the successful invasion on Utah and Juno Beaches, Bend Heroes Foundation will fly military service flags at the Bend Heroes Memorial in Brooks Park from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
They will also display 40 flags bearing names of local WWII veterans on Veterans Memorial Bridge adjacent to the Bend Heroes Memorial. At least one flag will honor a D-Day invasion veteran from Bend.
A sign displaying D-Day, June 6, 1944 will be displayed at the memorial.
All flags will removed at 6:45 p.m.
