Thousands gather in Big Bear to remember Jackie, beloved bald eagle and livestream star

BIG BEAR, Ca. (KTVZ) -- Thousands of people gathered in Southern California on Saturday to honor Jackie, the bald eagle whose life at Big Bear Lake was watched by millions through a popular livestream.

The memorial, called “Wings Over Big Bear,” brought community members and fans to Bear Mountain Ski Resort for a final farewell to the 14-year-old eagle. Jackie died in August after a brief illness.

Jackie became known far beyond Big Bear through a round-the-clock nest camera operated by Friends of Big Bear Valley. Viewers watched her raise her chicks, protect her territory, and share the nest with her mate, Shadow.

During her life, Jackie mothered seven eaglets that successfully fledged.

“This exceeded our wildest expectations, and it’s wonderful to see how many people Jackie has touched,” Big Bear Lake Mayor Randall Putz said.

Friends of Big Bear Valley Interim Executive Director Shelley Egan said she had tears in her eyes because of the turnout and the way Jackie brought the community together.

The ceremony included music, remarks from community and conservation leaders, and the unveiling of a painting of Jackie by local artist Jillana Marshall. A mural was also created during the event.

The tribute continued Sunday with wildlife education and conservation activities around the Big Bear Valley, including a guided birdwatching walk, native seed collection, and trail work.

Organizers said the weekend was meant not only to remember Jackie, but also to celebrate the connection she inspired between people, wildlife, and the mountain habitat she called home.
