Central Oregon soccer gets off and running with strong starts
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ)-- The high school soccer season is officially underway, and several Central Oregon teams are starting the year with victories.
Caldera Girls Rally Past Putnam
The Caldera Wolfpack girls soccer team opened the season with an offensive battle, defeating Putnam 5-3.
Caldera led 2-0 in the first half before Putnam began to fight back.
Ailynn Padilla put Putnam on the board after controlling the ball and firing a shot just past the goalkeeper, cutting the deficit to one.
Putnam then tied the game from the penalty spot when Lily Huen converted the opportunity.
Caldera quickly responded. Cameron Emerson delivered a corner kick into the box, where freshman Anna Klos headed the ball into the net to put the Wolfpack back in front.
Huen answered again from the penalty spot to tie the match at 3-3.
Caldera regained the lead when captain Ginny Klos converted a penalty kick, giving the Wolfpack another advantage and creating back-to-back goals for the Klos sisters.
The Wolfpack added one more goal when Blair Downs found the back of the net off another corner-kick opportunity.
Caldera held on for the 5-3 victory and starts the season 1-0.
The Wolfpack will return to action Thursday against Silverton.
Summit Girls Knock Off 6A Lake Oswego
The Summit Storm girls also opened their season with a win, taking down 6A Lake Oswego 2-1.
The match was tied late in the second half when Coco Skoverberg sent the ball upfield to senior teammate Nina Taft.
Taft battled through contact with the goalkeeper, stayed with the play and finished with her right foot to give Summit the late lead.
The Storm held on from there, earning a 2-1 victory over Lake Oswego and starting the season 1-0.
Summit Boys Earn First Win
Shortly after the girls' victory, the Summit boys took the field against Hood River.
The Storm entered the match coming off a draw against Jesuit to begin the season.
Summit struck first when senior captain Zach Bradley won possession and fed junior striker Will Newton.
Newton finished the chance to give the Storm a 1-0 lead early.
Hood River answered from the penalty spot, with senior defender Benjamin Tama converting to tie the match at 1-1 at halftime.
Newton wasted little time finding the net again in the second half.
The junior gained possession, quickly turned and fired a shot with his left foot for his second goal of the match.
That proved to be the game-winner as Summit held on for a 2-1 victory, earning its first win of the season.
The Storm will face Wilsonville on Thursday.
