TimberNook: A child care center outdoors, coming to Redmond
The new day care operation to be based in Redmond, is part of a broad nature-based developmental program. It emphasizes kids getting outdoors to help early learning.
News release from certified TimberNook provider Robin Greenwood.
TimberNook is an international organization that provides children with sensory rich outdoor play experiences. TimberNook Central Oregon invites you to the open house launch celebration Saturday, May 20 from 2:00P.M. to 4:00P.M. at the following private residence: 4000 NW 25th St. Redmond, OR. TimberNook Central Oregon site will be the second in the state, the other located near Portland.
As an occupational therapist and home-educating mother, I value children’s growth and development, not only for my own children but yours as well. Evidence has shown a correlation between the decrease of outdoor free play and the increase of learning disorders such as ADHD, anxiety, and sensory processing.
“Play in nature, particularly during the critical period of middle childhood, appears to be an especially important time for developing the capacities for creativity, problem-solving, and emotional and intellectual development,” states Dr. Stephen R. Kellert of Yale University. A growing body of research suggests that psychological and physical health improve for children when they spend time in nature, utilizing their imaginations and creativity, on a regular basis.
TimberNook isn’t a program that teaches the importance of ecology and nature. It is a program that provides children ample time and space to explore their surroundings, create, build, design, take risks, resolve conflicts, problem solve, and dive into their imagination while fostering a love for the great outdoors.
There will be a brief program introduction at 2:00, followed by a Q&A session, and an opportunity for the children to play in the outdoor classroom.
If you, or you know someone who also values the importance of outdoor play experiences for children, please reach out to me, as I am looking for a partner so that I can offer year round programming for Central Oregon families.
