Watch: Rare sticking snow along the north Oregon coast slickens roads, prompts school closures

By Luisa Anderson, KGW

ASTORIA, Ore. (KGW) — People along the northern Oregon coast range woke up Monday morning to rare snow on the ground, causing several school districts to cancel class. Several also canceled classes for a second day Tuesday due to slick road conditions

While no official measurements were available Monday afternoon, a KGW crew in Astoria estimated that an inch or two of snow fell in some areas with higher elevation. In downtown Astoria, there was only a dusting of snow on the grass and wet roads by then.

Traffic cameras from the Oregon Department of Transportation showed sticking snow on stretches of Highway 26, Highway 6 and Highway 101 on the coast.

Many school districts across northwest Oregon and southwest Washington also had delayed start times on Tuesday due to winter weather.

On the northern Oregon coast, the Astoria, Jewell, and Warrenton-Hammond School Districts were closed for a second day.

Astoria police urged drivers to slow down and give themselves extra travel time, and shared a photo on its Facebook page showing a truck that appeared to have crashed into a pole.
