Rain, snow, and freezing rain today, icy in spots

The weather pattern is very complicated as far as the precipitation type is concerned. The area will be dealing with a wintry mix of rain, snow, freezing rain and possibly some sleet. This is going to occur most of the day, but the freezing rain may hold off until after sunset. 

The snowfall amounts will be light as the flakes will mingle with the rain and have a tough time accumulating. The more dangerous aspect to the forecast today will be the icy glaze generated by the freezing rain.  

Freezing rain is rain that freezes on contact and ice forms and builds.  It is called ice accretion, but it is easily described as accumulating ice. The amount of ice expected to accumulate on tree limbs, power lines, cars, roads, windshields, and bridges will be light.  Probably less than a tenth of an inch, but any ice is dangerous, so please be careful.  

The timing of the precipitation is most of the day, but the icy mix will be late in the afternoon. The region will start to dry out before the sun comes up Sunday morning, but the icy roads will be present most of the morning.  

Another round of rain and some snow is slated to arrive on Sunday night and will last until Monday morning. Since it is President’s Day, schools will not be in session, so no closures are expected. Also, this round of precipitation is likely to be more rainy than snowy at lower elevations.
