Sunny and warm Tuesday, chilly with mountain snow Wednesday

The ups and downs of Spring are on display this week as the temperature readings Tuesday will approach 80 in the high desert, followed by a chance for snow on Wednesday.  Our snow chances are mainly for areas above 4000 feet, which include Sunriver and La Pine.  Considering the near 80° temps on Tuesday the chance for any snow to accumulate will be low, but slick roads are likely.

The timing of the rainy mix of rain and snow will be mid-morning Wednesday, but only spotty showers are expected. The bulk of the moisture will fall in Eastern Oregon. A cooler day Thursday, following a chilly Wednesday may allow some snow to accumulate on grassy areas Thursday. The chance for some measurable snow in Bend, Redmond, Prineville, and Jefferson County is once again low.  There may be an inch or two south of Lava Butte.

My main concern with this next round of cold weather and mixed precipitation is the roads.  Travel will be tricky for most on Thursday and Friday as the temps will start out in the upper 20s, allowing for some patchy ice.

This is probably not the last round of snow this Spring, and it won’t be overly impressive as far as totals go, but it will be snow and it will be slick.  Spring is the season of transition and here in the shadow of the Cascades the transition is quite variable.

Mountain resorts should be excited about the snow.

The Full Solar Eclipse is next Monday, April 8th and will be best viewed well east of Oregon. We may see about 20% of the Sun covered.
