Wintry pattern overnight into Thursday, slick roads and a rain/snow mix

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Cascades of Lane, Marion, and Linn Counties Thursday as snow and rain are expected.  The advent of the wintry precipitation is before sunrise, so the mountain passes will be impacted by slick and slushy at times road surfaces.  I don’t expect much of the snow to accumulate, as the ground will be able to absorb most of the snow before it begins to pile up. That being said, travel through the passes tomorrow morning will be tricky and the highest peaks may see 3 or 4” of snow. 

As for the lower elevated locations of the high desert, the situation is quite different as the temperatures will not support much accumulation. The Sisters and La Pine, Sunriver regions may see some accumulations on some grassy areas and leaves of trees, but generally the snow will melt as it hits the ground. The snow will be wet and mingled with the rain providing a slick and messy commute throughout the region.  Allow extra time to get to work or school.  This will be the first “winter-like” event of the season and although it will be short lived and relatively low impact, it is a good reminder to get your car kit ready.  Preparation for trouble is never a bad idea.

The rest of the week will be dry as we recover from this cold snap and wintry pattern.  Temperatures will be in the 30s overnight Thursday into Friday with some spots hitting the 20s. If there is any lingering water on the roads, we may see some icy scenarios Friday morning.

Dry and mild weather is likely on Saturday and Sunday with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s. Clouds lower and thicken Sunday afternoon ahead of more rain slated for Monday morning. It will be well above freezing, so only rain is expected.
