Mild pattern taking over, colder pattern into the weekend
Not much change in the forecast with respect to the clear skies. High pressure is in complete control of the region and we will see mostly sunny days and cold nights. Through most of the week the mercury in the thermometer will be in the 50s, well above normal, which is the low 40s. Into the weekend a big drop in the air temperature starting with highs Friday in the upper 30s, followed by the low 30s Saturday, and Sunday.
In the upper levels of the atmosphere, we are currently on the milder side of a ridge of high pressure. This ridge is what will continue to bring in the above normal temperatures through Thursday. At the surface we are dealing with high pressure as well, keeping the clouds away and the temps above normal as well. The change arrives late on Thursday as a few clouds arrive ahead of the big chill.
Thursday will be the last mild day of the week as highs will be in the 50s once again, but just barely. Clouds will move in as the day moves along as we prepare for a much colder regime to arrive Friday.Â
The air arrives from the north as a trough develops east of the area, over the Yukon, and taps into the air around the arctic circle. This location allows the colder air to arrive Friday and we should drop about 15 degrees from Thursday to Friday. Saturday an area of low pressure drops well south, into Southern California, and will be even colder air to the Beaver State, as the below normal pattern remains through at least Sunday.Â
The chance for some snow is possible on Friday, but very low. A few of the computer models are suggesting a passing snow shower, others are not indicating anything. The recent snowfall prognostication is for more of a few flurries than snow showers. That will be monitored as we get closer to the weekend. Look for the main story to be the cold air this weekend. Lows will be in the teens; highs will be in the low 30s.
