Scattered storms expected today and Saturday

Bend, Ore (KTVZ) – Scattered showers are expected to cause concerns this afternoon and Saturday. The rain chances occur in the heat of the day and will generate lightning and gusty winds. The lightning may start new fires in the region, which is unfortunate as we are getting a good handle on the fires that were started in mid-July. 

The new drought monitor was released yesterday and there was no change from last week to this week. The extreme drought conditions are over approximately 80% of the Tri-Counties of Deschutes, Crook, and Jefferson. Very low water table, low reservoirs and significantly stressed vegetation and animals.

As for the weather forecast, Saturday will be mostly sunny to start but as the day moves along the chance for showers and storms returns. The wet weather will be more likely across the Cascades and well east, but the high desert of our three counties will still see a chance for scattered storms. The highs will be in the middle 80s, probably by around 3pm, then drop as the showers arrive.

Overnight into Sunday will be quiet and cool as the skies partially clear. Lows will be in the low 40s to low 50s and winds will be light.

Sunday will be a warm and dry day as the moisture clears the region. Highs will approach 90 in a few locations as the solar energy takes over.

The beginning of the work week will be dry as well under partly to mostly sunny skies. The highs will reach the middle 80s and winds will be noticeable but not overwhelming.

Little change is expected until the end of the work week when the chance for showers and storms returns. Next week is going to be a quiet week as the firefighting efforts continue.

Last night a new fire started as a result of a lightning strike. It was in central Wheeler County along route 19 south of Fossil. It is being attacked aggressively today and has consumed about 230 acres.

Highway 26 remains open Crook County and the southern portion of the Rowe Creek Complex West Zone is getting buttoned up nicely.  The Grasshopper fire is still challenging the fighters but has been getting squared away in the west, north and southeast.  Just portions of the eastern flank and a segment of the SW side are causing trouble at the moment. The reports from the region are promising. 

Thanks to all the fire fighters and construction contractors that have been on the front lines this summer.  A brutal fight this year, and a dangerous one, thank you for all you do.
