(Update: Woman, man identified)

A Grants Pass woman who called 911 to report a man had been assaulted and she was driving him to the hospital early Saturday morning was killed when her car left the road and plunged 200 to 300 feet Troopers responded shortly before 1 a.m. to a 911 call on Galice Road, OSP Capt. Tim Fox said.

A preliminary investigation found that the woman, identified Monday as Hailee Fox, 21, of Grants Pass had called 911 to report a man had been assaulted and was in need of medical attention. Fox said she stayed on the phone with dispatchers and began driving to the nearest hospital.

As troopers responded, they found the man, identified as Rodrigo Herrera, 24, also of Grants Pass, in the middle of Galice Road and evidence a car had left the road and plunged into Hellgate Canyon.

Rural Metro Fire personnel rappelled into the canyon and found a Honda Civic with a female driver who had sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene, Fox said.

Herrera was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The captain said no more information will be released as the investigation continues.

OSP was assisted by Josephine County Search and Rescue and Rural Metro Fire.
