La Pine woman arrested in DUII pedestrian crash

(Update: DCSO identifies driver, victim, lists charges; pedestrian in fair condition)

A 77-year-old La Pine man was seriously injured and a 53-year-old La Pine woman arrested on assault, DUII-drugs and other charges Thursday morning after a car-pedestrian crash on Highway 97 in La Pine, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Kevin Dizney said dispatchers received a report at 10:12 a.m. of an erratic driver weaving from lane to lane while heading south on the highway.

Within a minute, the crash was reported at the intersection with Huntington Road.

A red 2012 Kia Rio driven by Sheri Lynn Barnes struck pedestrian Harold Headrick as he attempted to cross the highway from west to east at the intersection.

Barnes stopped and remained at the crash scene, Sgt. William Bailey said deputies determined in their investigation that Barnes was under the influence of a suspected controlled substance and was arrested.

Headrick was taken by ambulance to St. Charles Bend with what Bailey said were serious, life-threatening injuries. However, a house supervisor at the hospital said he was in fair condition late Thursday afternoon.

Both the pedestrian and driver were conscious when deputies and medics arrived.

Barnes was taken to the county jail in Bend and booked on charges of DUII (drugs), second-degree assault, felony methamphetamine possession (more than 2 grams), reckless driving and reckless endangering. Her initial bail was set at $75,000.

The crash and investigation blocked off the southbound lane, but traffic was able to use the turn lane to get around the scene.

A crash reconstruction expert was sent to determine, among other things, how fast the woman was driving.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by Oregon State Police, ODOT and La Pine Rural Fire District medics.
