Bend police issue 28 distracted driving tickets at intersection

KTVZ

Bend police handed out 28 tickets and gave six warnings for distracted driving with cellphones or other mobile devices during last Thursday’s enforcement detail at the intersection of Southeast Ninth Street and Wilson Avenue, officers said Monday.

The grant-funded three-hour enforcement detail involved several officers, with the location not announced in advance, Sgt. Eric Hagan said.

Following are the results of the detail:

-28 citations for operating motor vehicle while using mobile electronic device

-6 warnings for operating motor vehicle while using mobile electronic device

-14 warnings for other observed traffic violations.

The goal of the enhanced distracted driving enforcement was to educate the public on cellphone usage in an attempt to reduce the number of traffic incidents caused by distracted driving and the use of cellphones.

The detail was in cooperation with a grant from the Oregon Department of Transportation for distracted driving.
