Two Hines residents were killed in a two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon at the intersection of U.S. highways 20 and 395C two miles east of Burns, Oregon State Police reported.

An investigation found that Judy Patterson, 78, of Hines, was heading south on Highway 395C around 2:40 p.m. at the wheel of a 2000 Mercury Sable when she failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection with Highway 20, OSP Captain Tim Fox said.

Patterson’s car was struck on the driver’s side by a westbound 2015 Chevy Suburban driven by Amanda Hoyt, 43, of Burns, Fox said.

Patterson and her passenger, Charles Thompson, 83, also of Hines, died at the crash scene. Hoyt was taken by Harney District EMS ambulance to Harney District Hospital in Burns, where she was treated for injuries and released, according to Fox.

The crash and investigation shut the eastbound lane of Highway 20 for about 2 1/2 hours.

OSP also was assisted at the scene by the Harney County Sheriff’s Office, Burns Fire Department and ODOT.
