Bend-La Pine Schools begin attendance area review process

In preparation for the fall 2019 opening of Bend-La Pine Schools’ new 600-seat elementary school in north-central Bend, a volunteer team – working with district staff – has formed to define the new school’s attendance area and redraw attendance areas throughout Bend in ways that balance enrollment and reduce pressure felt at the district’s overcrowded elementary schools in the city.

Bend-La Pine Schools’ 27-member Attendance Area Review Committee invites interested community members to drop-in to learn more about the attendance area review and adjustment process and talk to committee members during an open house-style public meeting from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22 at Sky View Middle School.

At the event, members of the committee will staff stations where attendees can learn more about existing Bend area elementary school attendance areas and the priorities that will inform the committee’s work to identify new elementary school attendance areas throughout Bend.

Community members will be able to share input in person or through an online survey, which will be open from 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 22 through 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 29 at our Attendance Area Review webpage.

The committee will consider these comments as they begin to draft potential new elementary school attendance area maps for community review in December.

These maps will be shared with the public during two open house style meetings:

4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4 at Sky View Middle School 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6 at Pacific Crest Middle School

The committee is expected to make its final recommendation to the Superintendent in January 2019. Every neighborhood elementary school in Bend is expected to see a change in attendance area by the conclusion of the process. The approved elementary school attendance areas changes will be implemented for the start of the 2019-20 school year.
