2 dogs killed, 8 saved in Crook County outbuilding fire

Two dogs died in an outbuilding fire in the Juniper Canyon area southeast of Prineville early Monday morning, but first responders rescued eight others from inside or next to the burning structure, officials said.

Crook County Fire and Rescue was dispatched shortly before 2 a.m. to the report of a large fire in the area of Southeast Davis Loop, Battalion Chief and Fire Marshal Russell Deboodt said.

Crews arrived to find a 20-by-30-foot outbuilding ablaze. Two dogs perished in the fire but Crook County fire crews and sheriff’s deputies were able to rescue eight other dogs from inside the outbuilding or kennels along an exterior wall, Deboodt said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Deboodt said the most probable cause was an electrical failure in the structure.

Crews from Crook County Fire and Rescue’s Juniper Canyon station were the first to arrive on the scene, assisted by a crew from the agency’s main station in Prineville. A total of two structural engines, a water tender and 10 firefighters responded to the blaze.
