2 more dead whales wash ashore in Washington

EVERETT, Wash. (AP) – A dead gray whale washed ashore in Everett, Washington, over the weekend.

The Daily Herald reports the whale was spotted Sunday near Everett’s Harborview Park.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration spokesperson Michael Milstein says police and the state Department of Fish and Wildlife planned to tow the carcass Tuesday to Camano Island, where it would be left to decompose.

Milstein says authorities hope to examine the whale to determine its age, gender and cause of death.

He says it’s the 13th gray whale to wash ashore in Washington this year, while last year at this time there had been three or four. Milstein says another dead whale was found at Cape Disappointment on Saturday.

He says a number of recently washed-up whales have appeared skinny and malnourished in what he says overall is a healthy population.
