Possible freezing rain tonight, snow expected later this week

The wintry pattern is upon us as the area is going to get cooler and wetter for the next several days. Tonight, the chance for light freezing rain is on the table so icy roads may be an issue Wednesday morning.

Freezing rain is rain that falls as rain (liquid) then freezes on contact with objects that are below freezing, like your car, the roads, sidewalks, back deck and more. This is a very dangerous driving scenario and may impact the region before midnight.  The other issues with freezing rain are that the weight of the ice may bring down tree limbs and power lines. This is not going to be a big event and we may only see an icy glaze in the region. Nonetheless, icy roads in any capacity, are dangerous. The location is being targeted north of Redmond, but we all need to be on guard.

The other issue will be the chance for some measurable snow this week and into the weekend. Snow is expected to fall overnight Thursday into Friday with only light amounts anticipated. This may be the beginning of a series of snow events.

Saturday will bring a more robust snow event to the region with heavy snow on the Cascades and snow levels lowering to the 2500 foot range. Bend and other cities along highway 97 may see as much as 3 – 5” of snow.

This is well out in the future for us to nail down snowfall amounts, but it does seem likely that we will have to break out the shovels over the weekend.
