An Arkansas sheriff’s deputy was fatally shot, and a suspect is in custody, state police say

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas State Police say a sheriff’s deputy has been fatally shot while attempting to serve a warrant, and a suspect is in custody. State police said 60-year-old Stone County Deputy Justin Smith was shot Tuesday afternoon at a home about 5 miles north of Mountain View while trying to serve 52-year-old Clinton Hefton with a misdemeanor warrant. State police say early evidence indicates that Hefton resisted arrest and shot at Smith. The deputy was found fatally shot by officers who responded. Hefton was taken into custody after a brief standoff. He is being held at the Cleburne County jail and has been charged with capital murder.
