Bitter start to the day, not as cold this afternoon

The arctic blast of bitter cold air is starting to retreat to the north and east. There is still a major cold snap in place as temps are about 20 degrees colder than where they should be for Mid-January. Highs will top out in the low to middle 20s this afternoon, while low 40s are normal for this time of year.

Snow has ended and travel is improving, but I would wait as long as possible this morning before heading out. Temps will warm slowly, and roads will slowly clear, so holding out for a few extra hours might not be a bad idea.

Monday will be a few degrees colder as highs will be in the lower 20s, but the sub-zero readings are in the past. There may be some decent sunshine Monday afternoon reflecting a lot of light off the snow, so wear your shades.

Tuesday starts out dry, but clouds move in as the day moves along and more snow is expected Tuesday night into Wednesday. This precipitation may switch to a wintry mix by the mid-day time frame of Wednesday.

Bottom line: Stay inside as much as you can, but if you do go outside, be sure to cover as much of yourself as possible.

Keep an eye on the Red Banner at the top of the page for updates on the winter weather watches, warnings and advisories as they update periodically during an event like this one.

Stay safe.
