Mountain snow likely through Tuesday, wintry mix in the High Desert

Winter Weather Advisory in place for portions of the viewing area; check the red banner above for updates to the weather alerts, as they change frequently.

The bulk of the precipitation will fall on the Cascades, with an additional foot or more of snow by the end of the day Tuesday.  The mountain passes are going to be very dangerous to navigate during the next 36 hours or so due to the reduced visibility, heavy snow and wind. Travel is not recommended. Lower elevations, below 4,000 feet, will be likely to get a wintry mix of mainly rain and some snow.

The locations from Bend north to Warm Springs will be seeing very little snow and once the morning commute has ended, there may be only spotty showers of rain and or snow.  This will not be the case south of Bend. From Lava Butte to La Pine, there is the likelihood of 2 - 4” of snow by the time the morning commute rolls around Tuesday. This will be more of a rain and snow mix after sunrise, but overnight there may be some plow-able snow in that area so keep the shovels handy for your sidewalks and driveways. Sisters is included in this discussion as their location near the eastern side of the Cascades will provide them with a few inches of snow as well.

Once this round of mountain snow and high desert rain ends, we are in line for a lengthy period of dry and milder weather.  There will be high pressure over the region from Tuesday evening through at least the beginning of next week. Temperatures are going to be warming into the 60s by the weekend and the solar energy will melt most of the snow below 4000 feet.

Spring will be felt by this weekend and it appears that it will be here to stay.  Can’t rule out a late season snow event, but for now it looks like we have turned the page on winter.
