Fire destroys La Pine garage-shop, spreads to home, vehicles, trees and brush; three dogs perish, one escapes
Cause of blaze under investigation; medical calls delayed response
La PINE, Ore. (KTVZ) – A fire that destroyed a La Pine detached garage-shop Monday afternoon spread to a nearby home, as well as several vehicles, trees and brush before crews were able to stop its spread. Three dogs perished in the house fire, while one escaped unhurt, officials said.
La Pine Rural Fire District crews were dispatched around 1:15 p.m. to the structure fire in the 16000 block of Sparks Drive, Assistant Chief Dan Daugherty said.
La Pine Fire crews already were committed on two medical transports to St. Charles Bend and had another medical call pending, creating “a significant delay to fire response,” Daugherty said in a news release.
The first arriving duty officer reported the garage/shop was engulfed and flames were spreading to the vehicles, trees and a slow-moving wildland fire.
The first engine crew to arrive was able to stop the fire spread in the home at about 50% within 20 minutes of arriving, Daugherty said.
A search of the home found three deceased dogs, but one did manage to escape unharmed.
Crews were on scene about three hours, putting out hot spots and conducting overhaul work.
Two residents were not home when the fire broke out and have been displaced, Daugherty said. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire was under investigation. Officials had no damage estimate.
La Pine Fire was assisted at the scene by several mutual-air partners, including Crescent, Bend and Sunriver Fire, the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.
