Mountain snow to continue this week, spotty showers over the High Desert
The region will have a tough time finding any sunshine this week as the area will be under a persistent pattern of on and off rain showers and mountain snow. Today in Bend, I saw graupel, which is sometimes referred to as soft hail. Basically, it is formed when supercooled raindrops freeze onto a snow crystal.
We are in the middle of a weird transitional phase of seasons that often provide a variety of different weather phenomenon in Central Oregon. This week will be defined by mountain snow and high desert rain that will be mingled with some snow. A series of low pressure systems will push through the Pacific Northwest and drag the moisture over the region. The chance for precipitation will be present each of the next several days.
There may be a break in the showery pattern Wednesday, but quickly followed by more rain and mountain snow Thursday. Friday looks to be on the dry side again, then rain and snow are in the forecast for both Saturday and Sunday.
As we begin the new month of May, the weather patterns will be problematic. Also, this time of year the computer models have a rough time sorting out the weather scenarios in our region. There is a variety of solutions coming out for us to cypher through and sort out. Challenging to say the least.
Travel through the mountain passes will be problematic all week.
