Heat wave begins, hot conditions expected to last through next week

The mercury in the thermometer is expected to reach the upper 90s to low 100s in Central Oregon Friday and repeat each afternoon through at least Thursday. The National Weather Service has extended the Heat Advisory for portions of Deschutes, Crook and Jefferson counties until Thursday at 10 pm.  The Advisory is set to begin Friday at noon. Make sure you prepare for the heat as this will be one of the longest stretches of hot weather in some time.

Friday, the mercury in the thermometer will top the 100° mark in several places, and those that don’t get to 100 will be very close. The air is very dry and the winds are light, so the sun will warm the region quickly. There is a bit of good news, the dry air and light winds overnight will also allow the air to cool quickly, so the hot days will be followed by mild nights.

Saturday through Tuesday will be the heart of the heat. Most areas will see temperatures readings in the low 100s. The heat will be dangerous starting today when we top out in the 90s, and will be dangerous for over a week.

If you are planning any outdoor activities, make sure you take frequent breaks, stay in the shade as much as you can, drink plenty of water and wear light colored and loose fitting clothes.

The fire danger in the region will be extreme by next week, so it is essential that you be aware of the fire dangers. Any spark could ignite a fire that will grow very rapidly.

Keep an eye on your neighbors and your pets. Livestock also need extra attention in this heat.

Be sure to monitor the "Red Banner" at the top of this page to see if there are any updates to the Heat Advisory or an upgrade to an Excessive Heat Warning.
