In attack that shocks quiet Oman, gunmen kill 6 and wound dozens more at a Shiite mosque

KTVZ

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Authorities in the Gulf Arab state of Oman say several gunmen burst into a Shiite mosque and opened fire, killing six people and wounding nearly 30 more. The attack stunned the peaceful sultanate and was the deadliest there in recent memory. The Islamic State, through an affiliated news agency, claimed responsibility for the attack in the capital of Muscat on Tuesday, without providing evidence. The Sunni Muslim extremist group considers Shiites to be heretics, but this is the first time that it has asserted responsibility for an attack in Oman. There is no known branch of the Islamic State in Oman, a country that tends to stay out of the sectarian disputes roiling the wider region.
