Reed Market Road closing overnight for 2 weeks of paving work; 5 other Bend streets to close for shorter periods
(Update: Adding video of Tracee Tuesday's report)
BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- To pave and maintain road conditions, the city of Bend is closing the western section of Reed Market Road during the nighttime hours, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., from now through August 28.
Reed Market Road is the first of a series of nighttime paving projects in Bend this season, officials said in last week's announcement. Paving treatments include grinding out and then replacing asphalt. The process can take a couple of days.
The city does night work in neighborhoods when it’s necessary for the safety of the traveling public. Due to the high volume of travelers on Reed Market Road and the other night paving locations, the city needs to perform this paving work at night to minimize traffic disruptions. Doing this work during daytime hours would be extremely difficult for the traveling public and create safety concerns on these roads.
Paving work will be done in sections, moving from the Bend Parkway westward to Century Drive. Detours will be marked. Please use caution when traveling in the area during this activity.
“We understand this can be an inconvenience for the traveling public and disruptive for neighbors in the area,” said Transportation and Mobility Department Director David Abbas. “We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding while we maintain City transportation systems.”
The Transportation and Mobility Department uses public funding responsibly, implementing cost-effective maintenance strategies to maximize the life expectancy of our roads. The City’s “Keep Good Roads Good” philosophy means we maintain and preserve streets with the most cost-effective treatment for the road condition — the right treatment at the right time.
Other night paving plans include:
- Riverside Boulevard, August 28-29
- Butler Market Road, September 3-4
- NW 12th Street, September 4-9
- Division Street, September 9-12
- Bear Creek Road, September 12-17
Street preservation work is weather dependent and work dates may change.
A road’s condition helps the City determine maintenance plans. To learn more about the City’s street preservation plans, which also include chip-seal and slurry seal road treatments, visit bendoregon.gov/streetpreservation.
