La PINE, Ore. (KTVZ) – A drug-detection K-9’s alert during a recent traffic stop by Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies on Highway 97 in La Pine turned up over 22 pounds of methamphetamine and nearly five pounds of heroin, leading to charges against the female driver and male passenger, both from the Willamette Valley.

Deputies pulled over the Hyundai Elantra around 11 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14 at Highway 97 and Rosland Road, sheriff’s Sergeant Jason Wall said Tuesday.

While deputies were completing the traffic citation, a Bend Police Department narcotics K-9, Bonnie, and her handler arrived on scene, and the dog alerted to the presence of drugs in the car, Wall said.

A subsequent search yielded 22.42 pounds of methamphetamine and 4.74 pounds of heroin, the sergeant said.

The driver, a 57-year-old Canby woman, and her passenger, a 32-year-old Salem man, were issued citations in lieu of custody on charges of meth and heroin possession.

NewsChannel 21 policy is not to name arrested individuals until and unless formal charges are filed.

Asked why that has not yet happened in this case, District Attorney Steve Gunnels noted, “Typically, with a citation, it takes a few weeks to get the reports, and the citation is usually for 30 or more days from the date of arrest.”
