Nearing “windy” conditions and a slight chance for rain with incoming cold front
Temperatures today will top out in the low 70s. Cloud cover is expected to roll in this morning so it is possible some areas only reach the upper 60s. Lows tonight will be chilly, in the 20s and 30s. Wind gusts will be robust this afternoon, coming from the west at about 20-30mph.
A cold front and low pressure system will sweep through our region this afternoon. With it, windy conditions and cloud cover. We unfortunately have a very slim chance of seeing any measurable rain. Sisters, Warm Springs, and Madras could see a light shower make it over the Cascades in the early afternoon, but it won’t be impressive. You can pack a coat with a hood but I’m not convinced you’ll need to use it. Our critically dry surface means we won’t see much, if any, rain hit the ground.
We are long overdue for some wetting rain. Our "wet" season begins in November, but that doesn't mean we don't see rain through summer and early fall. Since June, we have seen roughly 1.40 inches less rain than we would normally expect to see.
Dry surface conditions and the gusty winds this afternoon raise concern for rapid fire growth. There is a Fire Weather Warning out for areas south and east of us, due to those areas being even drier and windier than us here in Central Oregon. Luckily, most of the current fires in these areas are well contained, but the potential for new starts to behave erratically is high. Be safe and practice fire safety.
Our skies will clear and we’ll begin to heat up Saturday for a beautiful weekend. Temperatures will climb into the upper 70s by the end of the weekend and continue into early next week.
Don’t forget to keep an eye out for the hidden pumpkin in my forecast this month! Have a great weekend!
