WASHINGTON (KTVZ) – Senator Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., issued the following statement Monday marking one year since the Hamas-led terrorist attack, and resulting military engagement and humanitarian crisis in Gaza and across the region:

“It is with heavy hearts that we commemorate one year since Hamas’ horrific terrorist attack against Israel on October 7, 2023.

"As I did one year ago, I strongly denounce Hamas and believe they must be held accountable for the violence of October 7. Today, I continue to grieve with the many families and friends mourning the tragic loss of loved ones or still waiting for their loved ones held hostage to return home. My thoughts are also with the Palestinian families who have endured 12 months of violence and displacement.

"Now, more than ever, the U.S. must use all available leverage to prevent further escalation in the Middle East, bring home all hostages, deliver vital humanitarian aid, and secure a lasting ceasefire,” Merkley said.
