Cold nights and dry days this holiday weekend
The overall pattern will be defined by the cold nights and the dry afternoons. The overnight low temperatures this weekend will be in the single digits and teens and some low 20s due in part to the mostly clear skies at night. In the afternoons the high temperatures will rebound to near normal levels in the low to middle 40s under mostly sunny skies.
The winds in the upper levels of the atmosphere will flow from the northwest for the next couple of days allowing for the dry pattern to continue. There is not much moisture to work with at the moment and I expect that to continue. During this time of year, the daylight hours are short, around 9 hours compared to 15 hours of darkness, so any heat that is gained in the day will have plenty of time to radiate away at night.
The foggy mornings this week have been a concern for travelers, especially over the passes. Also, since temps are below freezing each night, there has been some freezing fog. Freezing fog is fog that will freeze on contact creating an icy glaze on objects like your car windshield and road surfaces. Please be aware of the potential for icy conditions whenever you encounter fog overnight this time of year.
Thanksgiving will be dry and chilly with highs in the middle 40s under mostly sunny skies. Friday looks to bring more sunshine to the area as well as temperatures in the 40s.
Central Oregon will gradually warm to the 50s by Monday as a weak ridge builds into the area by the end of the weekend.
Please stay safe when traveling this week and have a Happy Thanksgiving.
