REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- The City of Redmond said Wednesday it is proud to announce Stephen Lopez as its newest captain with the Redmond Police Department.

Lopez most recently served as the police chief in Sunriver.  He fills the vacancy created by current Captain Aaron Wells, who the city says has accepted the position of undersheriff to Sheriff-Elect Kent van der Kamp.

Lopez will begin at Redmond PD on January 21.

“It is an honor to be selected as Redmond’s next captain, and a privilege to join the amazing men and women who serve the Redmond Police Department,” Lopez said in the announcement.  “I look forward to working collaboratively with our officers, community members, and City leaders to contribute to the high standard of professionalism, transparency, and responsiveness the department is known for.”

Stephen Lopez holds a master’s degree in public safety from the University of Virginia, is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, and brings more than 18 years of law enforcement experience to the department.

“We are proud to see Captain Wells take the next step in his outstanding career.  Aaron’s legacy in Redmond is significant,” stated Chief Devin Lewis. “We are also fortunate to have attracted the interest of Chief Lopez.  Stephen is one of Central Oregon’s top law enforcement professionals, with exemplary credentials and expertise.”

The Redmond Police Department has 70 of employees, 55 of those being sworn officers.
